Having a healthy diet is about making the right food choices to keep your body
functioning at its best thefinancialmetrics. By avoiding foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar you can
improve your health and reduce your risk of disease.


A diet that includes a range of fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy products
is essential for good health. This type of eating plan helps you maintain a healthy
weight and decrease your risk of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease,
stroke and cancer.
The key to a healthy diet is choosing foods that provide vitamins, minerals and
other nutrients from each of the five major food groups. These are: Fruits and
Vegetables, Grains, Proteins, Dairy and Fortified alternatives and Fat.
You can easily find a variety of healthy foods that are tasty and easy to prepare.
Some of these include wholemeal bread, yoghurt and fresh or dried fruit.
Try to avoid processed foods, such as pre-packaged pies and snacks, as they can
often contain added sugars and fats that are unhealthy for your health. Instead, try
to make meals at home using a range of fresh ingredients, such as meat, fish, fruit
and vegetables.
Choose lean sources of protein, such as eggs, beans, nuts and a range of low-fat,
low-sodium fish and poultry. These are lower in saturated fat than other foods and
are a good source of protein, fibre, iron and zinc.
Limit your intake of saturated fats, as these can increase your cholesterol levels and
lead to heart disease and other health problems. You can replace some of the
saturated fat in your diet with monounsaturated fats, which are found in olive oil,
canola oil, avocados and nuts.


A healthy diet should also include plenty of vegetables, such as green leafy
vegetables and orange and yellow fruits. Vegetables are full of antioxidants and
vitamin C, which can help to fight infections and disease.
Vegetables are also a good source of fiber, which can help to maintain bowel health
and lower your cholesterol levels. Vegetables are also low in calories and can add
flavour and texture to your dishes.
You can incorporate more vegetables into your meals by adding extra veggies to
stir-fry, soups and other dishes. Vegetables can also be a great source of vitamins
and minerals, such as vitamin A.
Adding more vegetables to your plate will increase the amount of fiber in your diet,
which can help to reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
A healthy diet includes at least 3 servings of fruit and 2 cups of vegetables per day.
Vegetables can be fresh, frozen or canned and can be served in a variety of ways,
such as steamed, boiled, baked or raw.
Eat less meat and more fish, such as canned tuna, salmon, sardines, mackerel and
other types of seafood. These are lower in saturated fat and contain omega-3 fatty
